Use of Various Sonar Methods to Support Underwater Investigations

Remote sensing tools have significantly improved the effectiveness of Divers and Marine Contractors to document underwater conditions and communicate to clients. Digital images easily provide real time information for field personnel, and help improve safety of all concerned.
Several samples of sonar use are provided. In general two main types discussed are Side Scan, and Scanning Sonar. Each use the same general principals of sonar to image conditions underwater. Their basic difference is the method that they use to collect data. Both methods provide digital images that not only communicate conditions, but can be scaled to provide quantities and accurate measurements.
Over the past several years, we have used both methods with numerous contractors. Repeated use on projects ranging from siltation studies for power plant intakes, to debris removal at ship berths have become a major asset to field personnel. Divers now typically request verification of conditions using sonar, especially in low visibility and strong current conditions. Improvements in this technology have made this a critical tool for working in dangerous environments.
