Tether Management

Postby divetech » Mon Jun 15, 2009 1:51 pm

One thing we have done with out neutral Video Ray tether was to buy a bag of 20 egg sized fishing net floats from a commercial fishing supply dealer, cut the floats in half on a band saw and drill two holes in them, they can then be clamped to the tether and tie wrapped hence giving an nice catenary which keeps the tether clear from the bottom snags and from stirring up sediment, especially in potable water tanks.

This same trick is also useful if your conducting a wreck inspection. It keeps the tether "straight up" from the VideoRay. Of course it also helps if the tether handler doesn't make a mess of things :D

Scott,

Are you trying to say the Greek sign confused the tether handler? The unnamed & non disclosed person should have been paying attention to the job at hand instead of trying to read a Greek sign (that incidently was also written in English)...

So pleased we opted for the Video ray TDS slip ring reel option!!! I have seen tether tangles like this when working offshore with work class ROV systems, usually in real deep water which inevitably ends up in a tether re temination!!!!

I have found that with Tether Management when you have no Cable Reel available the Over and Under Method should always be used and followed to keep the Tether from getting into knots and tangled up on itself. Another option if you have room is to lay a figure 8 on the ground or deck of the boat which again will keep the tether free of hang ups and knoting. We have done this with Micro Class units, Observation units and larger units such as the SeaRover systems and mohican ROV systems.
